Clearing book covers for use in TV and film productions can be one of the trickiest challenges to navigate. With huge differences in the size and type of publishers—along with their varying approaches to handling these requests—it can sometimes take months to get that signature.
The process is often disproportionately time-consuming and can eat up a significant chunk of your time. Which might not be an issue for a hero book if you’ve started the clearance process 12 weeks out. But it becomes a serious problem when you’re just a week away from the shoot and suddenly need clearance for 30 book covers to fill the lead character’s study
Over the past few years, I’ve worked with a lot of British publishers and found a few to be consistently responsive and willing to sign a standard production release. This can save you significant time and effort, as it avoids lengthy negotiations to amend third-party terms.
Just a quick heads-up: the world of clearances changes rapidly. People move jobs, companies merge or get bought out, and approaches to copyright permissions and legal documents evolve as a result.
Think of this as a guide rather than a definitive map

Additionally, I’d like to highlight HarperCollins and Penguin Random House. While both publishers only issue their own release forms (and don’t sign production releases), their terms are generally approved by most lawyers. This makes them great options to consider as well.
HarperCollins | Huge Catalogue covers most formats and genres
Penguin Random House | They own 100's of smaller publishers so cover most genres and formats
