When clearing books for Film and TV productions, tracing the right publisher can sometime be an impossible task. One thing to note is that a vast number of small publishing firms have been bought our by larger ones who have also been - in turn - bought out by the big guys. This list gives a bit of break down of some of those "chains of purchase" so you can get the permission you need agreed.
Sometimes you might get a stack of books bought cheaply at auction or hired by weight. Trawling though every inside page to track down each publisher then trace a contact can be a huge job. When you're looking at piles of historical books a lot of those publishers and imprints have been bought out by larger companies over the years.
This list is not exhaustive but pulls together a good range of UK publishers and imprints. It shows who has bought out who so hopefully shortcut your research to find the copyright owners and get your release signed quickly If you have time and scope to work with your props buyers and Set decs then a more direct approach might be contacting these friendly publishers
Hopefully you can use a quick text search to find the publisher you're looking for - I'd really love to hear about any publishers you've found that are not on this list so I can include them.
